1st Lt. Thomas Joseph Hallgarth
My grandfather's B-47 and crew perished 43 years ago. He would have made a career in the Air Force.
My grandfather trained at Mather AFB in Sacramento, not too far from McClellan AFB, completed Navigator school in Texas and died serving at the base in Lincoln, Nebraska. He rests in Golden Gate National Cemetery. He expected to retire with the military. He probably would have served in Vietnam.
My grandfather was born and baptized at Sacred Heart Church in New Jersey in 1940. He was a good student, especially in math & science, which makes for a good navigator. He was a real Boy Scout who loved big band and rock and roll music and he played the drums. He hung around the Jersey shore and went to the same High School as Jack Nicholson, the actor. My grandfather loved playing in his garage band, The Rockets, and could do a pretty awesome drum solo. They played all over the Jersey Shore and in Ocean Grove. I can only imagine what a clown he was
One of the things most treasured in my grandfather's suitcase is the letter from the Mayor of Comfrey, MN dated March 5, 1963
To the Family of Lt. Hallgarth,
The past Saturday afternoon, March 2, our community held a memorial service at the site of the B-47 crash, the place which has truly affected your lives. I am trying to express our sympathy to you and yours. Words have a futility at such a time as this but it may be said that never has a community been more united in wishing to convey its’ most sincere expression of sympathy to the wives and families of these men who gave their lives in the service of our country.
We, the people of the village of Comfrey, and also the nearby farming area, feel that these men so guided their plane until the last possible moment to avoid crashing into the village, because of this effort, their bravery saved many lives.
I’m certain it could be sincerely stated –“Greater Love Hath no Man – than he who gave his life for his country or his fellow man.” Prayers for you and yours have been heard in churches of all denominations in our community. You, the families of these heroic airmen, have our deepest sympathy –may their devotion to duty help you in these trying times and may God give you strength to carry on for them.
Arthur J. Lilla – Mayor Comfrey
And so to conclude this post I would like to say Happy Birthday to my mother who is 1 year younger today. And I am glad that my mom found all the family she never knew, and all of my grandfather's friends who have stayed in contact with her over these past few years.
Happy Birthday Mom!
Shannon

11 posts. Well this makes 12. And I'm not feeling so good...thanks Sarah!
Wow pretty good loookn' Grandfather there Shan ;-)
Hahaha Thanks my Lady.
As in you're sad or you're ill?
ill...But getting better by the day. So you all don't have to worry about not seeing me on Sunday :-p
hahaha....yes Elaine, I've gotta agree with you there :-D
*sigh* the good die young...
Not true!
Well it sure seems that way!
Pope John Paul II??? Pope Benedict the XVI??? I can go on and on and on...
.................I'm not done either!!! My grandparents, great aunts, Cero, and friends!!!
Okay, no need to get upset Damien.
I, could go on as well....but, we don't want to start up an argument on Shannons Blog, now do we Damien?
You, know, for all who read that last comment of mine, it made no sense....except for the last part.....
hahaha yeah...I understood what you were trying to say though....I think
Only you would Kat ;-)
Let's see perhaps I should rephrase "The Good die young", maybe it should be "The good lookin' die young"? What do you think?
Hahaha, well said my lady...well said
Because I'm sure I already said my point...I will try not to cause any *ehem* arguments or anything of the sort. But all I'll say, is that you're utterly wrong
The good looking die young?? I'd have to disagree, Elaine...I know quite a few VERY good looking people...who you wouldn't exactly consider young ;-P
It seems a lot goes on on the blogs when everyone else is too busy on their facebook profiles. I wonder if God picks good-looking people to die young so that Heaven can be more beautiful. Haha, yeah j/k
TTFN,
Jeeps.
I am utterly wrong?!!??!!? You know what I know that that is true, but I feel like starting up an argument....on Kat's Blog....So I say that you are wrong! Although.....hmmm, nevermind....Lady Lou
No, but neither are you utterly right! Cuz if you were, that would mean all the old people who have died are...well, not that good-looking. But whta you said CAN be true.
Jeeps.
Bring it, Elaine. I'm totally ready. *wicked grin*
You all are still fighting over this?....wow and I thought I had problems :-p Anyways Thank you Elaine for moving the argument over to kats blog. :-) I like my blog the way it is....not with all these kids causing argument all over the Internet. ;-p
Wait, Shan you have problems? Hahaha j/k. If you do, I've never noticed them.
Jeeps.
Okay now that Shannon, doesn't want the argument here....that kinda stinks. Cause the arguments are what makes the blogs interesting....for the most part anyway. ~Elaine
For the most part? Elaine, the aruments mean EVERYthing to the blogs. Just not on my blog. :-D
Haha, yea Jeeps I have problems. Like Arthritus! :-|
So WHY do you want the argument off YOUR blog??? I mean it's practaly a sin ;-)~Elaine
Haha, because I got Adults looking at this blogs. Yes that means all of your parents too. :-D Which is okay by me. I like it. So no arguments here. This is a argument free zone o:-p
I seeeee, but then, they would go to Kat's Blog...okay, well I suppose that I will have to put my argument on Kat's Blog. Farewell!~Elaine
Exactly Ealine! I'm so glad you figured this out! Congrats to you! So be my guest I am guessing Kat doesn't care that this argument is moving on....and already did move on. So thank you Kat!
Your Welcome Shan....I am cool with the parents seeing the arguements on my blog....it's all in good wholesome fun, right? :-P
Plus, using your rationality in a debate is very good. It's very good practice, and it'll come in useful for apologetics.
So sad. I do a new post. And this post is still alive. ;-p
And yet slowly dying......
That's what happens to the blogs when everyone joins Facebook, with the exception of Cat's blog. Right now, pretty much everyone's blog(s) is/are dying, including mine. And so with great Facebooks comes great sacrifice. But props to those who have stuck out and held the fort down. For instance, Lady Lou started that argument (as well as ended it too soon) which apperently kept other bloggers, who were left to tend their wounds inflicted by Facebook, posting their comments on this and Cat's blog. So, continue the good work and stay the course for those who have fallen to the lure of their Facebooks. We shall not have fallen in vain.
TTFN,
Jeeps, victim of Facebook.
like i say to everybodys post when i dont know what there talking about whens the party
You JUST missed it Tyler. It was yesterday! But thanks for the comment even though it has nothing to do with post. But its still okay.
